The project gallery, a new space in Theater Square, in the center of Athens begins with the exhibition Still Alive. 52 visual artists present compositions that are bold and original, invite us to reflect on basic concepts, lead us on a journey, in an evocative and multi-layered visual environment, starting from the skull – an emblematic theme that runs through the history of art: from the sculptural decorations of gothic temples and still lifes (vanitas) of the 17th century up to the diamond-covered skull of Damien Hirst.
An archetypal and mystical symbol, pagan and Christian, the skull motif is found in the art of different periods and cultures, as a memorial reminder of the cycle of life and mortality, of vanity and perishability, of the ephemerality of earthly pleasures and pleasures. of repentance, of the primordial fear of an inevitable fate and an impending final judgment.
At the same time, the skull emerges in the modern world as a powerful visual symbol, often unburdened by allegorical extensions, moral connotations and religious aspects, becoming a popular and “attractive” image emerging from the fashion world. of decoration and advertising to pop and youth culture. Sometimes again, he comes to illustrate the violence and horror, but also the diving in dark and uncharted areas of the unknown and the metaphysical.
For most of the participating artists in the exhibition Still Alive, the skull is a favorite subject, in compositions where the symbolic elements are combined with the aesthetic values, the critical look with the subversive approach, the references to its history art and contemporary reality, in compositions, extremely diverse in terms of style, style, different sensibilities and aesthetics that they prefer.
